Precious, 2018 /// Bubble wrap, House/Home /// Outdoor installation as part of A4 Sounds Exhibition Locale #2: Time to be Home /// The phenomenon of gentrification has emerged as the most effective means to artificially inflate property value in an area for the generation of profits in the pursuit of ever higher numbers on spreadsheets. This is a major contributor to the creation of housing "bubbles" in a constant cycle of inflation/deflation. The casualty of this process is the local community. This sculptural installation seeks to ponder the meaning of what a house represents - home, belonging, family, security, community - the fragility of that, its need for protection, and its importance to healthy human functioning. Do the bricks and mortar have more value than the lives within? Does the value lie in being a house or a home? Which is more precious - the tangible or the intangible? |
